Shekhar Kulbhushan Kapoor (born December 6, 1945) is an Indian film director, actor, and producer who has worked in both Hindi and international films. Kapur, a member of the Anand family, rose to prominence in Bollywood with a recurring role in the TV series Khandan in the mid-1980s and his directorial debut in the cult Bollywood film Masoom in 1983, which won the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Film that year, before achieving wide acclaim with the science fiction film Mr. India, which won the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Film that year (1987). With the 1994 Bollywood film Bandit Queen, based on Mala Sen's story of iconic Indian bandit and politician Phoolan Devi, he achieved international notoriety, winning the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi and the Filmfare Critics Awards for Best Movie and Best Direction. It was presented at the Edinburgh Film Festival and premiered in the Directors Fortnight section of the 1994 Cannes Film Festival.
